About Dr. Joanna Scott
I have worked for years as a child advocate to improve the lives of children and youth. Becoming a parent opened up so many questions for me and what social perceptions mean for my own child. I started Mocha Parents: Awesome Kids because I believe that parents of color or “Mocha Parents” face a unique set of challenges in raising their children. Many of our nation’s children of color or “Mochas” face significant barriers to opportunity that can most often be traced to race, place and class. I also believe that despite the messages that society and its institutions send to Mocha Kids, they are awesome in their wonder, humor, and intellect.
For those who care about academics. That’s me, too. I have doctorate in public policy from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County as well as a Master of Arts in both public policy and Counseling from Regent University. Okay, enough of that.
The work of parenting Mocha Kids is a marathon not a sprint, so I invite you to join me on the journey.
